Payment card frauds and scams are a serious issue for card providers and retailers all over the world.
As well as exposing retailers to the threat of legal prosecution, it can also result in complete blacklisting by Visa and the banks making it impossible for the business to receive card payments in the future.
How to avoid payment card fraud
- Look out for customers who try to purchase products or services with no concern for size, style, color, delivery, or price.
- Beware when customers try to distract or rush sales associates during card checking or POS transactions.
- Take extra care with any purchases made right on store opening or closing times.
- Be careful when customers try to use many different cards if cards are rejected during the payment process.
- Look out for occasions when customers request abnormal entry modes or functions, such as offline transactions, fallback, or manual key-in.
- Refuse abnormal payment cards such as blank cards or white plastic cards.
- Don’t allow customers to use the POS to make payments by themselves.
- Refuse any transaction where the customer asks you to follow their guidance.
- Refuse and immediately report any request to split the payment amount.
Additional considerations for ‘card absent’ payments
- Take extra care to check last-minute bookings.
- Reject requests to pay with card data during the arrival.
- Avoid random bookings with no care about location, size, price or availability.
- Reject any transaction where the customer tries to hide their identity.
- Take care when customers are booking many rooms or long stays.
- Be cautious if the customer tries to follow up whether the card data they’ve provided can be charged or not.
- Be extra careful if the customer tries to use many different cards after their first card data is declined.
